I wanted the feel of standing on the edge of the building, on the roof, ready to let go, but I didn’t want to fully picture a moment with the potential to be so graphic. I wanted a metaphor, not a trigger. So I drew a box – 2.5″ x 2.5″ with a dry erase marker on a piece of printer paper. I chose a figure, hands on her hips, looking outward, black and white to match the scenery. Minimal. I played with angles to find one that captured what I wanted to show. I started high and got more level with the figure. This way we have come out to the roof top with her. We can see what she sees- which in this case, is a blank slate on which you can write your own view, your own story.
