Thanks! Not the most in depth idea, but I was thinking about the phrase ‘just the roll of the dice’ and i had this tiny dollhouse size like 4 or 5mm wide dice and even then it was huge compared to this ho scale 2cm tall man, so i originally posted it to instagram and captioned it ‘just the roll of the very large dice.’
Thanks for telling me what brought it into being. That HO scale must be incredibly small for dollhouse dice to look so big in comparison! I think it is a great shot.
I want to get into “tinier” photography…kind of like Georgia O’Keeffe did with her painting, taking something small and making it really huge. I think you sure made that dice look huge. :)

Do you have a lens or filter recommendation for getting very close to things, for example, to have a ladybug fill the frame? I have some close-up filters, but the focus area is just a very skinny strip through the middle. I have a 50mm macro lens, but I can’t get super close with it (and the spiders haven’t been too happy about me bumping them with it, either!). I want to get close AND have the whole frame in focus. Thank you for any suggestions that you may have.

I don’t have a lot of experience with insect phootgraphy, but for my work I use a 100mm macro lens. It lets me get very close sharp shots of my ho scale figures which are about insect size so I think it would fit your needs. They can be a bit pricey though. Granted cheaper solutions are simply close up filters or reverse mounting your lens both which make focusing quite hard and specific. This is the one I have http://amzn.to/2i0aYpp

Have you ever done the reverse mounting thing? How did that work out? I’ve heard that it can damage the lens and/or the camera if done improperly and I know I’d be one to do it wrong.
I have close up filters and an extender of some type (with no glass) that goes between the body of the camera and the lens. I haven’t quite gotten that thing figured out yet. I guess it is time to try to do that. :)

I have reverse mounted. You can get a reverse mount on amazon for $6 or so. And it’s quite easy to work with. At the time I reverse mounted my 50mm lens so results will be different depending on the lens. The damage I think is only a risk because your lenses sensors are exposed so as long as you’re not bumping the lens into anything or leaving it on the camera like that for days you should be fine. I’m not sure whether it’s more effective than close up filters. You may even get a narrower field of focus with it. But it’s certainly something to try.
